How much hay does a horse need each day?
Planning answer: A commonly cited starting range is 1.5%–2.5% of body weight in total feed per day, with 2% often used for planning. For a 1,000 lb adult horse, that is 15–25 lb total feed, with 20 lb at 2%. Actual hay depends on forage quality, pasture, other feed, body condition, workload, climate, and professional guidance.
